Over the years we have bought books, read articles, and done many trials of information about weight-loss. It seems to be agreed on that it takes a set amount of calories to maintain weight at different points. These are a few:

200 lbs. ---3000 calories for maintenance

However, I have recently learned that in many cases dropping below 1400 to 1000 calories per day can trigger the body's starvation mode. This causes the brain to change our set-point to a very low amount of calories. The set-point is the point at which that metabolism lowers to almost a hibernation-like state. The brain keeps it there until we regain what we have lost plus a "cushion" of 10 to 15 extra pounds. This is the basis for the "yo-yo effect “that most dieters have experienced after crash or fad dieting.
